Statistics

The birth of Louis Brown, the world’s first IVF baby on July 25, 1978, revolutionized the management of infertility. Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), the broad spectrum of medical procedures used to treat infertility includes treatments that address complications of both the egg and sperm.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) or Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is done as first line of treatment in cases concerning tubal pathology, severe male factor infertility azoospermia, fertility preservation in cancer patients, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and donor oocyte. IVF is also recommended for patients with ovulatory dysfunction (PCOS) and endometriosis

ART offers many sub fertile couple’s effective treatment, but implantation failure remains the rate-limiting step: -- only around 25 % of transferred blastocysts will successfully implant (Edwards 2006).
Infertility is a global issue affecting approximately 13 to 14 per cent of the population worldwide resulting in close to one in six couples facing difficulty in conceiving. However, with a better understanding of human reproductive physiology and the availability of modern diagnostic technology, more and more couples are receiving the gift of parenthood.

Objectives for Reproductive Endocrinology

  • To impart in-depth elucidation of all aspects of an IVF cycle including pre-treatment evaluation and testing, keeping in mind the ethical and economic implications of the treatments.
  • Avail the opportunity to observe various treatment procedures both through theoretical classes, video feeds and visits to the clinic and operating room for ultrasound scans, oocyte recovery and embryo transfer.

  • A Masters in Clinical Embryology is pursued by clinical scientists and clinicians for academic and professional development in the field of reproductive science, infertility and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
  • To develop youth interest in the science of embryology.

  • To provide learning of a life cycle through the beginning stages.
  • Embryologists study the beginning of life and the science of reproduction. An embryologist is a scientist working with sperm, eggs, and embryos. Embryologists most commonly work with physicians to assist patients who have reproductive health issues. They usually work in hospitals and fertility clinics and may also perform laboratory work, research work or seek posts in academic institutions.
  • As an embryologist, students will perform diagnostic services and embryological procedures, such as in IVF at clinics and hospitals. Students will also be occupied with the collection, storing, recording, testing and fertilization of eggs from patients.
  • An embryologist’s work is generally carried out as part of a multidisciplinary team, including obstetricians and gynecologists, doctors, specialist nurses and counsellors
